The Harvest

At the start of summer, when I planted my garden, I told Kevin I wanted to have a “Harvest Party” when all my veggies and fruits came in.

I envisioned bowls of cherry tomatoes, guacamole made with my cilantro, snap peas, carrots, spinach salad, and fresh cucumbers.

Kevin laughed so hard at my “Harvest Party” idea he could hardly breathe.

Not because he didn’t believe in my garden, but because he is more realistic.

As I look at my garden today, at the end of summer, I also have to chuckle a bit.

The kids and I ate approximately 8 snap peas before the plant shriveled up.

The carrots are so small I would call them “newborn” instead of “baby” carrots.

My zucchini produced these enormous leaves and flowers, but never zucchini.

Some animal keeps finding my tomatoes before they ripen.

And the cucumbers took over EVERYTHING!

I am not exaggerating on that one. The plant twisted itself around everything it could find and weaves through the whole garden.

It overshadowed the spinach and cilantro and strangled other plants in its path.

So the harvest was not plenty.

The brightside?

I learned so much this first year gardening and I have beautiful cucumbers, which happen to be my daughter’s favorite vegetable.

I enjoyed being in touch with the earth more and I look forward to next year’s Harvest Party. 🙂

Although I had the best plan for my garden something else (cucumbers) took over. Sounds a bit like life, right?

But atleast we have cool cucumber slices.

  1. Hi Brittany, Well done with your cucumbers! It’s always nice to discover the things that grow well. Keep going and you will learn so much with each season.
