One fitness person Kevin and I follow has several pictures/videos of himself putting on his shoes before a workout.
It seems like an insignificant moment. Why not a sweaty trail picture or one bench pressing a billion pounds??
Because if you are putting on the shoes, you have already won so many battles. Especially the ones in your head.
I am tired. I am sore. I will do it tomorrow. It is raining. It is hot. It is cold.
By putting on the shoes, you have defeated all this self talk and decided to go anyway.
There are many instances in life where “putting on the shoes,” or starting, is the biggest step.
Many things that fulfill and bring joy require starting and defeating self talk.
I discovered writing out my self talk helps me conquer it.
Here was my self talk 6 months ago before I started this blog:
I need at least 6 months to think of a name for the blog. What will I write about? What if no one reads it? What if I write something stupid? What if I forgot how to use proper grammar? I don’t have time to write.
I started anyway.
And it turns out it only took one conversation with Kevin for a name to pop in my head. Turns out I can write about anything. Turns out it doesn’t matter if no one reads it. I will write something stupid. I did forget most of grammar (oops). And I have lots of time to write….because we find time for things we love.
If I can conquer the self talk, you can too.
But you have to start.
Take the first step, start, put on your shoes.
Then everything else can start happening.

Great post, Brittany! That’s such a watermark for me as well.. once my leggings and shoes are on, I know it would be pretty silly *not to do my daily cardio.

Thank you Dee! Yes, once I am dressed and ready to go I feel like I have to do something!! I used to try working out BEFORE coffee and realized that didnโt work at all. So coffee and shoes on and I can do anything!! ๐

Wow! did I need to hear this today. . . Due to unforseen circumstances, just around the bend, I am left with the remodel on a bathroom. Ugh! I forget to look at the already accomplished after each time I “put on my shoes”. This retired grandma can finish this!! Thank you so for the encouragement! Blessings on you ๐
